What is it used for?
Azithromycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic indicated for the treatment of respiratory, dermatological, urinary and sexually transmitted infections. It belongs to the macrolide antibiotics, whose action is to stop the growth of bacteria. It acts against several gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It is also effective against Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Treponema pallidum, Chlamydia and Mycobacterium avium complex.
It is a derivative of erythromycin which has the same pharmacological properties but is more stable in gastric pH, so that it is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and penetrates extensively into soft tissues. Because of its average long life, it can be administered as a single dose or, when appropriate, as a single daily dose for a few days, making it easier for the patient to comply with the prescription.
