What is it used for?
Famotidine belongs to a class of drugs called H2 blockers, histamine receptor antagonists, whose action is to reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach.
It is used as an anti-ulcer drug because of its potent prolonged action in the treatment of gastrointestinal ulcers and other digestive disorders, in particular it is useful in the treatment of peptic ulcer, gastro-oesophageal reflux, oesophageal lesions, as well as in other conditions where the stomach produces too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
It is also given to surgical patients before surgery to prevent nausea and reduce the risk of aspiration pneumonia.
