The first macrolide antibiotic to be discovered

Erythromycin sheet (in Spanish)

What is it used for?

Erythromycin was the first antibiotic of the macrolide family to be discovered and is the precursor and raw material for numerous molecules later discovered. Its action is to stop the growth of bacteria, and it is active against many bacteria that cause conditions such as pharyngitis, community-acquired pneumonia, skin infections, legionellosis, etc. It is also an alternative to beta-lactam antibiotics in allergic patients.

It is the drug of choice for the treatment of infections caused by gram-positive cocci, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Legionella pneumophila, diphtheria, coqueluche, conjunctivitis and Chlamydia trachomatis pneumonia, bacillary angiomatosis and infections in patients allergic to penicillins. It is also a safe alternative to tetracyclines in the treatment of pelvic Chlamydia infection during pregnancy.

Ercros is the first Spanish and European manufacturer of erythromycin base,  produced by fermentation. Part of the erythromycin produced is used to commercialise and part to manufacture, by chemical synthesis, different salts and derivatives.
